[in-Person Workshop] Backward Design Applied to Oral Assessment

Speaking is arguably the most valuable language skill and contemporary approaches in English language teaching emphasize the importance of maximizing student talking time in class. Having sufficient time to practice any skill is important, but simply providing speaking opportunities in your lesson without adequate instruction, scaffolding, task design, and assessment is unlikely to result in the quality of language development students need to deal with the challenges of real world communication. In this hands-on workshop we will consider factors that underlie the skill of spoken interaction, explore a framework for developing spoken interaction tasks, and follow the Backward Design model to design speaking lessons and assessment strategies in alignment with curricular content. Participants in this session will leave with practical ideas on how they can align their planning, teaching, and assessment practices in order to help students become more competent communicators.

[in-Person Workshop] Games and Gamification

We all know that motivation is a key factor in learning. As teachers, we are always working to motivate our learners, and games are one technique that many – if not most of us – have used. A newer approach is “gamification,” using game elements in a non-game context (such as the classroom) to encourage action. In this workshop, I’ll give a brief overview of why games and gamification are tools to help learners start learning and stay enthusiastic about learning. Then we’ll share ideas about ways that different types of games can be used effectively in the classroom. We’ll look at some games for different skill areas and overall motivation and try a few games, then discuss why they would work (or not) with your learners.
Next we’ll explore gamification, which is about turning the classroom environment into a space that uses game mechanics, the elements of games that designers employ, to enhance motivation and learning. As with anything else in education, it's how the techniques are used that makes a difference. We’ll go over how you can create a gamified class or skill area.
Bring a syllabus or lesson plan with you, if possible. We will discuss and plan ways to revise a syllabus to incorporate games and gamification components in a collaborative, communicative environment. The goal of the workshop is to equip you to bring games into your classroom effectively and to use gamification appropriately to engage and motivate your learners.

[in-Person Workshop] Keys to Scaffolding Academic Language Demands

In today’s world, adult learners are faced with complex language demands at school, work, and in their communities. Participants in this workshop will explore how to create engaging and challenging classroom tasks for the English language classroom that mirror those real-world demands (e.g. collecting, analyzing and presenting data; creating info-graphics; completing collaborative projects). Participants will practice implementing a framework for defining the academic language forms and functions required to successfully complete these rigorous class tasks and projects. In addition, they will identify the scaffolds needed to support learner success. Through lesson demonstrations, on-going reflection, and application to their settings, participants in this workshop should be able to:
● create challenging and engaging classroom tasks suitable for their settings;
● identify the language demands of instructional tasks, including academic language forms and functions and critical thinking skills;
● develop appropriate scaffolds for building language and thinking skills needed for success with rigorous instructional tasks.

[in-Person Workshop] An Inside Perspective of English teaching Education to Deaf Students Across the World and How to Build a Sustainable Classroom

Teaching English is a great challenge that provides teachers a better understanding of how diverse we are as humans even so when we are related by one common yet expanding field of belonginess: Language. However, as more and better English learning environments are built, so are the needs of students that never came in contact with English as a second language but unlike the reason that is mostly known, that of immigrating from a non-English speaker country to a English speaker community, it has to do with an isolating criteria that to this day is a norm, having an hearing loss. Deafness does not only impact the communicative skills in a hearing society, it is also a mark that condemns the person development to being given the chance to learn English in the academic system, but to proves to the world, that anyone deserves to be welcome in learning English and to do so not matter the profile of its condition, matter most, the profile of their English teachers and their inspiration to transform lives not by ears but from heart.

[In-Person] The Keys to Motivating 21st Century Learners

We live in a rapidly changing world, one that is increasingly interconnected. Our 21st century learners are growing up in an exciting but also challenging world that is fast-paced and technology-driven. As English teachers in this century, we are tasked with building skills for global communication. This includes digital, new media, and visual literacy skills because communication in English is inextricably linked to these 21st century literacies. Motivating this new generation of learners requires us to understand more deeply what it means to successfully communicate and collaborate across borders and cultures in English in this ever changing world. Hopefully by the end of the presentation, with keys in hand, we will all be inspired to motivate our 21st century learners.

[In-Person] Culturally Relevant Universal Design for Learning

“Technology for teaching” encompasses so much. Word-processors, interactive websites, social media, learning management systems, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence – and more. Teachers are pressed to know their learners, design effective environments for learning, provide formative and summative assessment, encourage learners to create digitally – and meet learning objectives on their curriculum. We want to be sure that our teaching is culturally relevant, giving all learners options to see people like themselves in material and activities.
Universal Design for Learning encourages teachers, curriculum designers, and technology specialists to design learning environments to meet the needs of all learners. Designing with learners’ cultural, physical, and intellectual differences in mind before the class starts, not just adapting while teaching, is the most effective approach. Technology tools, chosen thoughtfully, can also help us add culturally responsive universal design elements.
This talk will give examples of ways that we can use universal design for learning as a framework and technology as a tool for creating culturally relevant learning environments. Participants will be asked to reflect on key questions during the talk and to share with others. An annotated resource list will give teachers help in moving forward, using technology effectively in designing learning environments that are welcoming to all.

[Via Zoom] Empowering Learning by Becoming AI-Ready Educators

With the meteoric rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its increasingly predominant use in fields as diverse as finance and art, a steadily increasing number of students and teachers use it worldwide. Although adoption of this new technology has been surpassed perhaps only by the embrace of social media a decade ago, many educators have been reluctant to use it because of a number of reasons, chiefly fear of the new and a limited understanding of how to safely, efficiently and productively integrate AI tools within teaching and learning.
In this workshop, the presenter will review challenges and opportunities around generative AI, as they concern educators. Participants will discover ways to power up their teaching skills by becoming AI-ready. Key elements in the learning process, such as lesson and materials design, assessment, and feedback will be explored from the perspective of an AI-assisted refresh. Teachers and students will benefit from a hands-on approach to seeing generative-AI in action. They will have the opportunity to develop their own AI toolkit, including skills in prompt engineering for AI chatbots, tips & tricks for harnessing the potential of generative AI, and a scientific approach to using and learning from this new technology.

[Via Zoom] Chatgpt: Benefits and Challenges for Practicing and Assessing Oral Interaction

More than one billion students globally are learning English (Beare, 2016) with an underlying motive of being able to communicate with others. Thus, speaking in English is a primary goal for many students who learn English as a second and/or foreign (L2) language. However, providing learners with opportunities to practice speaking, and more specifically, interactional aspects of oral language, can be time- and resource intensive. Fully automated Spoken Dialogue Systems (SDSs) and more recently large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, could provide a solution, allowing learners to practice their interactional skills in English anytime, anywhere, even when an instructor or English-speaking peer is not available (Bibauw et al., 2019; Litman et al., 2018; Timpe-Laughlin et al., 2022).
In recent years, research on the use of SDSs and AI-powered LLMs for the practice, learning, and assessment of L2 interactional skills has grown substantially. In this presentation, we will critically review the research landscape, focusing in particular on aspects such as (a) the process of designing and operationalizing tasks in SDS and ChatGPT, (b) how learners interact with the systems, (c) the performances of human interlocutors vis-à-vis SDSs vis-à-vis ChatGPT, and (d) what learners are thinking about using ChatGPT for practicing their English language skills. We will discuss the affordances and limitations that these new types of AI systems have for practicing oral English and for deployment in English language teaching and assessment.

[Via Zoom] Background Knowledge: A Fundamental Tool in Developing Second-Language Proficiency

Historically, the perception of education is that teachers are experts whose primary task is to impart knowledge to students. This presentation will outline ways in which teachers can challenge this system by recognizing and harnessing students’ own background knowledge. In doing so, teachers will access an effective tool in developing oral proficiency, reading comprehension, and interpersonal connections in the second language classroom.
This presentation will first explore how integrating students’ background knowledge into day-to-day classroom interactions will enhance vocabulary acquisition and student engagement, thus resulting in increased oral proficiency. This session will then explore the role of background knowledge in literacy development, offering strategies on how to leverage what students bring to the classroom to improve reading and writing. Lastly, the presentation will discuss the role of lived experiences, personal stories, and individual perspectives as central to developing relationships, empathy, and understanding. By the end of the presentation, teachers will be equipped with a variety of strategies to help them find out what students know and to effectively integrate this knowledge into their daily instruction.

[Via Zoom] The Harvest and the Crop: How Film Photography Taught me to Teach Grammar

I rarely wonder anymore; anything I want to know feels only one click away. Yet I wonder, how much knowledge is too much knowledge? What does the statement, “I don’t like grammar” really mean? Why is artificial intelligence great at helping students cheat on my tests but horrible at planning my grammar lessons? In this session, we will consider teaching grammar in the information age, how to plan lessons that inspire production, and how grammar can become a tool of empowerment for our learners.

In today’s session, we will look at five simple, practical things that all teachers can do to help students become more successful with vocabulary, which will in turn help these students become better English speakers.
